The details that help most

1. Where the property is. A terraced lot in Forest Park, a graded subdivision pad in Chelsea and a lake home near Pell City come with very different ground, slopes and truck access, so the address alone tells a contractor a good deal.
2. What you have in mind, and about how large. A new or wider driveway, a parking pad, a back patio, steps down a bank, a shed or shop slab, or replacement of concrete that has cracked or settled. Paced-off length and width are plenty.
3. What the slab will carry. Family cars, or something heavier such as a work pickup, a bass boat, a pull-behind camper or a filled spa. The heavier the load, the more stone, depth and steel the slab usually needs.
4. What is there right now. Grass, a gravel pad, a worn asphalt strip or cracked concrete. Anything that must be demolished and trucked away first adds a step to the job.

Photos that are worth taking

Stand back far enough to fit the entire work area in one frame, ideally from the curb and again from the house, so the fall of the lot reads clearly. Then move in close on each crack, dropped panel and chipped edge. A bonus picture snapped while a thunderstorm is still draining off the yard, or minutes later, is the single most revealing image you can send, because runoff trouble underlies more ruined Birmingham slabs than weak concrete ever has.

What comes next

The next step is a visit to the property. Standing on the ground, reading the grade and checking how a truck can get in answers questions photos cannot, and only after that can anyone put an honest number on the work. Request the plan on paper, listing stone bed, slab depth, steel or fiber, joint spacing and surface texture, which makes it simple to hold one estimate against another.
